  4. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  5. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  6. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  7. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  8. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  9. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  10. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  11. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  12. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  365. Section: debian-junior
  366. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  367. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  368. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  369. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  370. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  371. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  372. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  373. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the

  396. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  397. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  398. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  399. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  400. with children as well, even those
  401. children.
  402. .
  403. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong

  448. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and

  450. .
  451. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  452. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  453. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  454. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  455. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  456. adults alike.
  457. .
  458. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  459. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  460. use the man page, and so on.
  461. .
  462. Finally, lavaps not only provides a very pleasing way to visualize
  463. running processes and the resources they use, but can also make
  464. discovering and killing errant processes an easy thing to do for
