  4. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  5. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  6. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  7. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  8. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  9. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  10. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  11. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  12. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  363. Section: debian-junior
  364. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  365. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for

  367. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  368. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  369. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  370. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  371. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the

  393. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  394. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  395. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  396. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  397. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  398. with children as well, even those
  399. children.
  400. .
  401. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong

  405. Scratch is an easy, interactive, collaborative, visual programming language
  406. with children from ages 8 and up as their target group.

  408. Arduino is a popular micro controller that is widely used by both people

  446. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and

  448. .
  449. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  450. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  451. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  452. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  453. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  454. adults alike.
  455. .
  456. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  457. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  458. use the man page, and so on.
  459. .
  460. Finally, lavaps not only provides a very pleasing way to visualize
  461. running processes and the resources they use, but can also make
  462. discovering and killing errant processes an easy thing to do for
