  1. Task: junior-arcade
  2. Section: debian-junior
  3. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  4. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  5. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  6. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  7. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  8. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  9. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending
  10. on the game.

  33. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  34. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  35. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  36. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  37. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  38. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  39. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  40. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other

  211. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  212. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  213. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the

  232. While XPilot has a broad international community of players (mostly
  233. on high-bandwidth connections) it can be enjoyed on a home network

  262. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  263. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that

  275. Section: debian-junior
  276. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  277. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  278. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  279. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  280. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.

  286. Task: junior-math
  287. Section: debian-junior
  288. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  289. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  290. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  291. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  292. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  293. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  294. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  295. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  296. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  297. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.

  307. Task: junior-programming
  308. Section: debian-junior
  309. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  310. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  311. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  312. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  313. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  314. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  315. with children as well, even those
  316. children.
  317. .
  318. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong

  348. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  349. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will

  362. Section: debian-junior
  363. Description: Debian Jr. System tools
  364. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  365. use their system.
  366. .
  367. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  368. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  369. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  370. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  371. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  372. adults alike.
  373. .
  374. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  375. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  376. use the man page, and so on.
  377. .
  378. Finally, lavaps not only provides a very pleasing way to visualize
  379. running processes and the resources they use, but can also make
  380. discovering and killing errant processes an easy thing to do for
  381. children who lack the ability yet to easily manage "ps" and "kill"
