  54. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  55. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  56. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  57. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  58. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  59. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  60. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  61. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  62. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  129. Suggests: anagramarama
  130. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  131. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  132. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  133. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  134. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  135. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  136. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending
  137. on the game.

  150. Description: Debian Jr. Card Games
  151. A collection of card games, for the time being just solitaire, which
  152. are probably more suited to older children than young, although
  153. the "memory" type games in pysol may appeal to children just entering

  171. These games all use OpenGL libraries. They will not work without
  172. decent 3D graphics cards providing hardware-accelerated OpenGL.
  173. .
  174. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  175. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  176. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the
  177. standard blood-and-guts fare in the 3D games universe, all of
  178. these games are suitable for children.

  191. xblast-tnt-sounds,
  192. xpilot-ng
  193. Description: Debian Jr. Network Games
  194. Network games bring people together from all over the world. Many times the
  195. game and chat is a place where people learn languages, how to communicate, and
  196. socializing skills.
  197. Package: junior-games-puzzle

  221. This sampling of packages was done in the hope that it will appeal to child
  222. and adult alike.
  223. Package: junior-games-sim
  224. Section: metapackages
  225. Architecture: all
  226. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${source:Version}), ${misc:Depends}, junior-config (= ${source:Version})

  236. ri-li,
  237. simutrans,
  238. wesnoth
  239. Description: Debian Jr. Simulation Games
  240. Simulation games tend to be rather complex, so they are recommended
  241. for older children, and even then some help from someone older may be
  242. needed.
  243. Package: junior-games-text
  244. Section: metapackages

  249. cowsay,
  250. moon-buggy | moon-buggy-esd,
  251. nettoe,
  252. sl,
  253. zivot
  254. Description: Debian Jr. Text Games
  255. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  256. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that
  257. very young children can enjoy them (e.g. snake)
  258. Package: junior-internet
  259. Section: net
  260. Architecture: all
  261. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${source:Version}), ${misc:Depends}, junior-config (= ${source:Version})
  262. Recommends: epiphany-browser | iceweasel,
  263. pidgin
  264. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  265. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  266. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  267. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  268. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.
  269. Package: junior-math

  281. pysiogame,
  282. tuxmath,
  283. x11-apps,
  284. xaos
  285. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  286. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  287. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  288. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  289. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  290. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  291. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  292. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  293. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  294. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.
  295. Package: junior-programming
  296. Section: metapackages
  297. Architecture: all

  308. squeak-vm
  309. Suggests: shoes,
  310. shoes4
  311. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  312. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  313. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  314. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  315. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  316. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  317. with children as well; even those that are not specifically aimed for
  318. children.
  319. .
  320. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong
  321. emphasis on the visual and concrete. Littlewizard is an icon-based
  322. graphical programming language also designed for children.
  323. .
  324. Scratch is an easy, interactive, collaborative, visual programming language
  325. with children from ages 8 and up as their target group.
  326. .
  327. Arduino is a popular micro controller that is widely used by both people
  328. learning electronics and programming as well as seasoned veterans doing
  329. complex projects. It is necessary to connect a physical Arduino circuit board
  330. in order to experiment with arduino.

  347. Suggests: bloopsaphone
  348. Description: Debian Jr. sound
  349. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  350. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will
  351. be things that children will use directly, a child's system
  352. administrator can make use of them to ensure that the child
  353. gets the most out of their system.
  354. Package: junior-system
  355. Section: metapackages
  356. Architecture: all

  360. hello,
  361. mc
  362. Description: Debian Jr. System tools
  363. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  364. use their system.
  365. .
  366. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  367. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  368. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  369. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  370. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  371. adults alike.
  372. .
  373. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  374. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  375. use the man page, and so on.
  376. .
  377. Baobab, the GNOME disk usage analyzer, enables the user to take a
  378. visual trip into the hard drive contents. It can be a mesmerizing first
  379. step, dvelving into the inner parts of the computer system. It serves
  380. both as an educational tool about file systems and file contents/size
  381. as well as a tool for analyzing what files are big if disk space is
  382. scarce.
  383. .
  384. Bubblefishymon is a computer load monitor dockapp which shows network
  385. traffic as fishes, CPU usage as bubbles, and a duck representing a
  386. duck.
