  13. Package: junior-tasks
  14. Architecture: all
  15. Depends: tasksel
  16. Description: Debian Jr. tasks for tasksel
  17. This package provides Debian Jr. tasks in tasksel. Tasksel is an
  18. alternate way to the metapackages approach to install packages which
  19. are intersting for the target group of Debian Jr.
  20. Package: junior-config
  21. Architecture: all
  22. Depends: adduser, ${misc:Depends}, menu, blends-common (>= 0.6.15)
  23. Description: Debian Jr. Project common package
  24. This package builds the basic infra structure of all junior-* packages.
  25. .
  26. This package provides some files which are common to all junior-* packages.
  27. Moreover it introduces a method to handle system users in a group
  28. junior using debconf.
  29. Package: junior-arcade
  30. Section: metapackages
  31. Architecture: all
  32. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  33. Recommends: bugsquish,
  34. bumprace,
  35. circuslinux,
  36. cuyo,
  37. funnyboat,
  38. heroes-sdl,
  39. holotz-castle,

  43. madbomber,
  44. supertux,
  45. tuxmath,
  46. vodovod,
  47. xsoldier
  48. Suggests: anagramarama,
  49. heroes-ggi
  50. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  51. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  52. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  53. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  54. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  55. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  56. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending
  57. on the game.
  58. Package: junior-art
  59. Section: metapackages
  60. Architecture: all
  61. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  62. Recommends: gimp,
  63. inkscape,
  64. mypaint,
  65. tuxpaint,
  66. xpaint
  67. Description: Debian Jr. Art
  68. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  69. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  70. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  71. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  72. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  73. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  74. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  75. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  76. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.
  77. Package: junior-education
  78. Section: education
  79. Architecture: all
  80. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  81. Recommends: gcompris,
  82. ktuberling
  83. Suggests: kstars,
  84. mathwar
  85. Description: Debian Jr. education applications
  86. This package includes a collection of educational programs
  87. for children. These applications suit children from 2 to 12.
  88. They will learn the computer mouse and keyboard as
  89. well as various skills (numbers, letters, logic, etc.).
  90. Package: junior-games-adventure
  91. Section: metapackages
  92. Architecture: all
  93. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  94. Recommends: balazar3,
  95. beneath-a-steel-sky
  96. Description: Debian Jr. Adventure Games
  97. Adventure games are interactive stories and puzzle solving, and can be quite
  98. challenging. Recommended for older children, maybe even requiring help from
  99. someone older.
  100. Package: junior-games-card
  101. Section: metapackages
  102. Architecture: all
  103. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  104. Recommends: ace-of-penguins,
  105. kpat,
  106. sgt-puzzles,
  107. xsol
  108. Suggests: spider
  109. Description: Debian Jr. Card Games
  110. A collection of card games, for the time being just solitaire, which
  111. are probably more suited to older children than young, although
  112. the "memory" type games in pysol may appeal to children just entering
  113. grade school.
  114. Package: junior-games-gl
  115. Section: metapackages
  116. Architecture: all
  117. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  118. Recommends: armagetronad,
  119. bzflag,
  120. extremetuxracer,
  121. gltron,
  122. neverball,
  123. supertuxkart,
  124. torcs,
  125. trackballs,
  126. tuxfootball
  127. Suggests: platinumarts-sandbox
  128. Description: Debian Jr. 3D Games (hardware acceleration required)
  129. These games all use OpenGL libraries. They will not work without
  130. decent 3D graphics cards providing hardware-accelerated OpenGL.
  131. .
  132. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  133. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  134. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the
  135. standard blood-and-guts fare in the 3D games universe, all of
  136. these games are suitable for children.
  137. Package: junior-games-net
  138. Section: metapackages
  139. Architecture: all
  140. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  141. Recommends: xblast-tnt,
  142. xblast-tnt-levels,
  143. xblast-tnt-musics,
  144. xblast-tnt-sounds,
  145. xpilot-ng
  146. Description: Debian Jr. Network Games
  147. While XPilot has a broad international community of players (mostly
  148. on high-bandwidth connections) it can be enjoyed on a home network
  149. as well. XBlast, on the other hand, achieves networking using the X
  150. protocol, so it is best suited to a local network.
  151. Package: junior-games-sim
  152. Section: metapackages
  153. Architecture: all
  154. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  155. Recommends: freeciv-client-gtk | freeciv-client-sdl,
  156. freecol,
  157. lincity-ng | lincity,
  158. wesnoth
  159. Description: Debian Jr. Simulation Games
  160. Simulation games tend to be rather complex, so they are recommended
  161. for older children, and even then some help from someone older may be
  162. needed.
  163. Package: junior-games-text
  164. Section: metapackages
  165. Architecture: all
  166. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  167. Recommends: animals,
  168. bsdgames,
  169. moon-buggy | moon-buggy-esd,
  170. nettoe,
  171. zivot
  172. Description: Debian Jr. Text Games
  173. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  174. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that
  175. very young children can enjoy them (e.g. snake)
  176. Package: junior-internet
  177. Section: net
  178. Architecture: all
  179. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  180. Recommends: epiphany-browser | iceweasel
  181. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  182. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  183. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  184. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  185. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.
  186. Package: junior-math
  187. Section: metapackages
  188. Architecture: all
  189. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  190. Recommends: bc,
  191. bsdgames,
  192. kig,
  193. x11-apps,
  194. xaos
  195. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  196. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  197. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  198. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  199. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  200. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  201. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  202. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  203. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  204. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.
  205. Package: junior-programming
  206. Section: metapackages
  207. Architecture: all
  208. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  209. Recommends: gvrng,
  210. kturtle,
  211. laby,
  212. littlewizard
  213. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  214. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  215. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  216. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  217. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  218. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  219. with children as well, even those
  220. children.
  221. .
  222. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong
  223. emphasis on the visual and concrete. Littlewizard is an icon-based
  224. graphical programming language also designed for children.
  225. Package: junior-puzzle
  226. Section: metapackages
  227. Architecture: all
  228. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  229. Recommends: frozen-bubble,
  230. gtans,
  231. hex-a-hop,
  232. lmemory,
  233. xjig
  234. Suggests: kartofel,
  235. stegavorto
  236. Description: Debian Jr. Puzzles
  237. Some puzzle-type games, from the more arcade-like and frozen-bubble to xjig (a
  238. jigsaw puzzle program), to lmemory (based on the classic "memory" card game).
  239. This sampling of packages was done in the hope that it will appeal to child
  240. and adult alike.
  241. Package: junior-sound
  242. Section: metapackages
  243. Architecture: all
  244. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  245. Recommends: audacious,
  246. bplay,
  247. cdtool,
  248. vorbis-tools
  249. Description: Debian Jr. sound
  250. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  251. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will
  252. be things that children will use directly, a child's system
  253. administrator can make use of them to ensure that the child
  254. gets the most out of their system.
  255. Package: junior-system
  256. Section: metapackages
  257. Architecture: all
  258. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  259. Recommends: hello,
  260. mc
  261. Suggests: lavaps
  262. Description: Debian Jr. System tools
  263. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  264. use their system.
  265. .
  266. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  267. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  268. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  269. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  270. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  271. adults alike.
  272. .
  273. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  274. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  275. use the man page, and so on.
  276. .
  277. Finally, lavaps not only provides a very pleasing way to visualize
  278. running processes and the resources they use, but can also make
  279. discovering and killing errant processes an easy thing to do for
  280. children who lack the ability yet to easily manage "ps" and "kill"
  281. from the command line.
  282. Package: junior-toys
  283. Section: games
  284. Architecture: all
  285. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  286. Recommends: gworldclock,
  287. lletters,
  288. oneko,
  289. xfireworks,
  290. xfishtank,
  291. xpenguins,
  292. xplanet,
  293. xplanet-images,
  294. xteddy
  295. Description: Debian Jr. desktop toys
  296. This metapackage will install desktop toys suitable for children. The
  297. collection contains some packages which might enjoy children and make
  298. them love their computer.
  299. Package: junior-typing
  300. Section: metapackages
  301. Architecture: all
  302. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  303. Recommends: gtypist,
  304. klavaro,
  305. ktouch,
  306. tuxtype
  307. Description: Debian Jr. typing
  308. This metapackage will install typing tutors and typing games for
  309. various skill levels. This collection of packages was assembled
  310. in the hope that children become comfortable with the keyboard
  311. quickly while having fun learning it.
  312. Package: junior-writing
  313. Section: metapackages
  314. Architecture: all
  315. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${binary:Version}), junior-config (= ${binary:Version})
  316. Recommends: abiword,
  317. aspell,
  318. dict,
  319. nano
  320. Description: Debian Jr. writing
  321. This metapackage will install tools for your budding young
  322. writer. A text editor, spell-checker, dictionary client and
  323. word processor are provided.
