  53. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  54. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  55. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  56. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  57. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  58. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  59. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  60. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  61. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  129. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  130. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  131. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  132. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  133. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  134. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  135. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending

  150. A collection of card games, for the time being just solitaire, which
  151. are probably more suited to older children than young, although
  152. the "memory" type games in pysol may appeal to children just entering

  170. These games all use OpenGL libraries. They will not work without
  171. decent 3D graphics cards providing hardware-accelerated OpenGL.
  172. .
  173. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  174. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  175. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the
  176. standard blood-and-guts fare in the 3D games universe, all of
  177. these games are suitable for children.

  190. xblast-tnt-sounds,
  191. xpilot-ng
  192. Description: Debian Jr. Network Games
  193. Network games bring people together from all over the world. Many times the
  194. game and chat is a place where people learn languages, how to communicate, and
  195. socializing skills.
  196. Package: junior-games-puzzle

  220. This sampling of packages was done in the hope that it will appeal to child
  221. and adult alike.
  222. Package: junior-games-sim
  223. Section: metapackages

  236. simutrans,
  237. wesnoth
  238. Description: Debian Jr. Simulation Games
  239. Simulation games tend to be rather complex, so they are recommended
  240. for older children, and even then some help from someone older may be
  241. needed.
  242. Package: junior-games-text

  248. cowsay,
  249. moon-buggy | moon-buggy-esd,
  250. nettoe,
  251. sl,
  252. zivot
  253. Description: Debian Jr. Text Games
  254. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  255. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that
  256. very young children can enjoy them (e.g. snake)
  257. Package: junior-internet
  258. Section: net
  259. Architecture: all
  260. Depends: junior-tasks (= ${source:Version}), ${misc:Depends}, junior-config (= ${source:Version})
  261. Recommends: epiphany-browser | iceweasel,
  262. pidgin
  263. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  264. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  265. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  266. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  267. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.
  268. Package: junior-math

  280. pysiogame,
  281. tuxmath,
  282. x11-apps,
  283. xaos
  284. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  285. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  286. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  287. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  288. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  289. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  290. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  291. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  292. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  293. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.
  294. Package: junior-programming

  307. squeak-vm
  308. Suggests: shoes,
  309. shoes4
  310. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  311. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  312. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  313. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  314. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  315. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  316. with children as well; even those that are not specifically aimed for
  317. children.
  318. .
  319. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong
  320. emphasis on the visual and concrete. Littlewizard is an icon-based
  321. graphical programming language also designed for children.
  322. .
  323. Scratch is an easy, interactive, collaborative, visual programming language
  324. with children from ages 8 and up as their target group.
  325. .
  326. Arduino is a popular micro controller that is widely used by both people
  327. learning electronics and programming as well as seasoned veterans doing
  328. complex projects. It is necessary to connect a physical Arduino circuit board
  329. in order to experiment with arduino.

  346. Suggests: bloopsaphone
  347. Description: Debian Jr. sound
  348. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  349. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will
  350. be things that children will use directly, a child's system
  351. administrator can make use of them to ensure that the child
  352. gets the most out of their system.
  353. Package: junior-system
  354. Section: metapackages
  355. Architecture: all

  359. hello,
  360. mc
  361. Description: Debian Jr. System tools
  362. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  363. use their system.
  364. .
  365. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  366. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  367. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  368. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  369. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  370. adults alike.
  371. .
  372. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  373. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  374. use the man page, and so on.
  375. .
  376. Baobab, the GNOME disk usage analyzer, enables the user to take a
  377. visual trip into the hard drive contents. It can be a mesmerizing first
  378. step, dvelving into the inner parts of the computer system. It serves
  379. both as an educational tool about file systems and file contents/size
  380. as well as a tool for analyzing what files are big if disk space is
  381. scarce.
  382. .
  383. Bubblefishymon is a computer load monitor dockapp which shows network
  384. traffic as fishes, CPU usage as bubbles, and a duck representing a
  385. duck.
