  1. Task: junior-arcade
  2. Section: debian-junior
  3. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  4. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  5. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  6. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  7. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  8. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  9. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending
  10. on the game.

  33. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  34. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  35. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  36. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  37. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  38. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  39. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  40. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  41. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  194. .
  195. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  196. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  197. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the

  215. Description: Debian Jr. Network Games
  216. While XPilot has a broad international community of players (mostly
  217. on high-bandwidth connections) it can be enjoyed on a home network
  218. as well. XBlast, on the other hand, achieves networking using the X

  244. Description: Debian Jr. Text Games
  245. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  246. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that
  247. very young children can enjoy them (e.g. snake)

  258. Section: debian-junior
  259. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  260. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  261. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  262. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  263. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.

  267. Packages: list
  268. epiphany-browser
  269. Task: junior-math
  270. Section: debian-junior
  271. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  272. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  273. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  274. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  275. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  276. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  277. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  278. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  279. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  280. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.

  290. Task: junior-programming
  291. Section: debian-junior
  292. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  293. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  294. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  295. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  296. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  297. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  298. with children as well, even those
  299. children.
  300. .
  301. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong
  302. emphasis on the visual and concrete. Littlewizard is an icon-based
  303. graphical programming language also designed for children.

  313. Section: debian-junior
  314. Description: Debian Jr. Puzzles
  315. Some puzzle-type games, from the more arcade-like and frozen-bubble to xjig (a
  316. jigsaw puzzle program), to lmemory (based on the classic "memory" card game).
  317. This sampling of packages was done in the hope that it will appeal to child
  318. and adult alike.

  329. Section: debian-junior
  330. Description: Debian Jr. sound
  331. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  332. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will
  333. be things that children will use directly, a child's system
  334. administrator can make use of them to ensure that the child
  335. gets the most out of their system.

  344. Task: junior-system
  345. Section: debian-junior
  346. Description: Debian Jr. System tools
  347. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  348. use their system.
  349. .
  350. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  351. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  352. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  353. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  354. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  355. adults alike.
  356. .
  357. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  358. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  359. use the man page, and so on.
  360. .
  361. Finally, lavaps not only provides a very pleasing way to visualize
  362. running processes and the resources they use, but can also make
  363. discovering and killing errant processes an easy thing to do for
  364. children who lack the ability yet to easily manage "ps" and "kill"
  365. from the command line.
