  9. Description: Debian Jr. Art
  10. Tools for children to produce artwork. The simplest of these is
  11. tuxpaint, which is designed for small children. It features sounds
  12. and easy to use controls. For older children, there are gimp and
  13. xpaint. While gimp is more complex, and is aimed at the graphic
  14. artist, it is not necessarily much harder to use than the older,
  15. less full-featured xpaint. Children starting out with just a small
  16. subset of the functions of these tools eventually pick up quite a
  17. number of new things as they explore, either with adults or other
  18. children with whom they share their computers, or on their own.

  25. This package includes a collection of educational programs
  26. for children. These applications suit children from 2 to 12.
  27. They will learn the computer mouse and keyboard as
  28. well as various skills (numbers, letters, logic, etc.).

  34. Description: Debian Jr. Adventure Games
  35. Adventure games are interactive stories driven by exploration and puzzle
  36. solving, and can be quite challenging. Recommended for older children, maybe
  37. even requiring help from someone older.

  43. Description: Debian Jr. arcade games
  44. This metapackage will install arcade games suitable, in the
  45. opinion of the contributors to the Debian Jr. project, for children
  46. of all ages. Mastering most of these games requires dexterity
  47. and cognitive skills usually developed only in the older children
  48. (around ages 5 to 8). But the youngest children may enjoy watching
  49. older players, or just poking randomly at the controls, depending
  50. on the game.

  57. A collection of card games, for the time being just solitaire, which
  58. are probably more suited to older children than young, although
  59. the "memory" type games in pysol may appeal to children just entering
  60. grade school.

  67. These games all use OpenGL libraries. They will not work without
  68. decent 3D graphics cards providing hardware-accelerated OpenGL.
  69. .
  70. While armagetron and gltron are different interpretations of the
  71. game depicted in the classic 3D-animated movie "Tron", Tux Racer
  72. is an all-original made-for-Linux 3D racing game. Unlike the
  73. standard blood-and-guts fare in the 3D games universe, all of
  74. these games are suitable for children.

  81. Network games bring people together from all over the world. Many times the
  82. game and chat is a place where people learn languages, how to communicate, and
  83. socializing skills.

  90. Some puzzle-type games, from the more arcade-like and frozen-bubble to xjig (a
  91. jigsaw puzzle program), to lmemory (based on the classic "memory" card game).
  92. This sampling of packages was done in the hope that it will appeal to child
  93. and adult alike.

  99. Description: Debian Jr. Simulation Games
  100. Simulation games tend to be rather complex, so they are recommended
  101. for older children, and even then some help from someone older may be
  102. needed.

  109. The principal virtue of these games is their simplicity. They will run
  110. on any hardware, and some of them are simple enough to control so that
  111. very young children can enjoy them (e.g. snake)

  117. Description: Debian Jr. Internet tools
  118. For children, a wide variety of Internet tools are not necessary to get
  119. started. Most users will find the Iceweasel web browser covers their needs.
  120. As children's familiarity and sophistication of use of the Internet develops,
  121. you will probably want to add more Internet clients to the child's system.

  126. Section: debian-junior
  127. Description: Debian Jr. educational math
  128. This metapackage will install educational math programs suitable for
  129. children. Some of the packages use mathematics that is well beyond
  130. the abilities of young children (e.g. fractals and cryptography), but
  131. hopefully using these let them gain an appreciation of the beauty of
  132. math from an early age. Other packages allow children to explore and
  133. learn math concepts in an engaging, interactive way. Some packages
  134. are more general, providing math activities as only one part of the
  135. package, e.g. bsdgames includes "arithmetic" in addition to other
  136. non-math games, and x11-apps provides xcalc.

  142. Description: Debian Jr. programming
  143. The emphasis for this sampling of programming packages for children
  144. is first on simple interpreted languages. Also important for using
  145. languages with children are good documentation, and some ability to
  146. produce visual programs without too much effort. It is by no means
  147. a complete list, and you are encouraged to explore other languages
  148. with children as well; even those that are not specifically aimed for
  149. children.
  150. .
  151. The Logo language is specifically designed for children, with a strong
  152. emphasis on the visual and concrete. Littlewizard is an icon-based
  153. graphical programming language also designed for children.
  154. .
  155. Scratch is an easy, interactive, collaborative, visual programming language
  156. with children from ages 8 and up as their target group.
  157. .
  158. Arduino is a popular micro controller that is widely used by both people
  159. learning electronics and programming as well as seasoned veterans doing
  160. complex projects. It is necessary to connect a physical Arduino circuit board
  161. in order to experiment with arduino.

  168. This metapackage will install a sampling of sound packages for
  169. a system that is used by children. While not all of these will
  170. be things that children will use directly, a child's system
  171. administrator can make use of them to ensure that the child
  172. gets the most out of their system.

  179. This package includes a few tools for helping children learn about and
  180. use their system.
  181. .
  182. Midnight Commander is more than just a file manager. It is shell with
  183. which children can explore and manage their own accounts. It can be a
  184. great help for the very young, as it saves them some typing (as
  185. compared with using a command-line shell directly). It is also packed
  186. with power and flexibility which can be tapped by older children and
  187. adults alike.
  188. .
  189. The 'hello' sample program can be used as an instructional aid, as
  190. an example of how to invoke programs from the shell, specify switches,
  191. use the man page, and so on.
  192. .
  193. Baobab, the GNOME disk usage analyzer, enables the user to take a
  194. visual trip into the hard drive contents. It can be a mesmerizing first
  195. step, dvelving into the inner parts of the computer system. It serves
  196. both as an educational tool about file systems and file contents/size
  197. as well as a tool for analyzing what files are big if disk space is
  198. scarce.
  199. .
  200. Bubblefishymon is a computer load monitor dockapp which shows network
  201. traffic as fishes, CPU usage as bubbles, and a duck representing a
  202. duck.
